A domain name system (DNS) converts a human-readable internet address, such as Website.com, into a computer-readable IP address that a web browser may use to locate and display a website. DNS is sometimes referred to as the internet’s “phone book,” as it conducts the heavy labour of remembering a website’s “phone number” so that people only need to know the name.
